We celebrate Talk Like A Pirate Day with a week of pirate fun, from food to books to school & costumes, we do it big. This year I added books to our festivities & wanted to share our 3 favorite pirate picture books.

Dirty Joe the Pirate is a delightful children’s story about a pirate whose treasure is dirty socks. Excellently written in rhyming stanzas, Dirty Joe sees a ship in the distance and prepares to board…until they realize its another pirate ship. Not just any pirate but Stinky Anne! If you don’t like underwear humor, this isn’t for you, but we loved it :).

Illustrated by David Shannon of ‘No, David!‘ Fame, Pirates Don’t Change Diapers is the sequel to How I Became a Pirate. Jeremy Jacob was in charge of caring for his baby sister when his pirate friends came to get their treasure. It’s a great talk like a pirate day picture book with fun pirate talk:

“Babysit?” Braid Beard scratched his head. “Pirates don’t sit on babies!”

“No sittin’ on babies!” Hollered the crew.

Fun, fun stuff.

Port-Side Pirates is a Barefoot Book that includes a watch & sing-along CD for your computer where you can watch or be the star. A catchy tune, I sing it rather than read it.

From the front deck, we saw a wreck
The day I went to sea
I lived on board a pirate ship
And the captain said to me

Oh we go this way, that way
Port side, starboard
Over the deep blue sea.

At the end are a few pages about pirates — the difference in types of ships, pirates around the world & more. Another favorite of ours this year.

What are your favorite pirate picture books?
