{Simplify} 5 Ways to Improve Your Marriage Without Spending a Dime

As everyone knows, a good marriage doesn’t happen on accident. You really need to work at it; sometimes harder than others. And sometimes harder than your spouse :) . Here are five ways to simply improve your marriage:

1. Simply listen.

When he talks, put your book down or close the lid of your laptop, especially when it’s just the two of you. If you have kids, train them not to interrupt when daddy is talking. It’s a sign of respect and men need respect.

2. Simply obey.

Yeah, I know. This one is soooo hard for me. Last week, hubby requested a total overhaul of toy storage in our home. I figured out how to make it happen (it only took a day) and he was pleased as punch when he came home.

He would much rather have had that fixed than for me to plan elaborate dates! Ask him if there is something that makes him nuts that you could fix for him! Or simply do the next thing he asks, without comment. Or try :) .

3. Simply feed him.

You have to cook anyway, so plan to cook something he likes at least once a week. Last year, hubby (and I) came up with a list of 21 favorite meals complete with sides. I keep this in my household notebook to reference when meal planning. Do you know what your spouse likes?

4. Simply love.

Show affection to your hubby. Greet him at the door with a kiss when he returns and give him a better one when he leaves ;) . And remember that men express love through you-know-what ;) . I’ve been advised that they should have around 5 servings a week. That doesn’t always happen, but it’s better for everyone when it does :) !

5. Simply Serve.

It’s so obnoxious to have to pick up his dirty socks off the floor, two feet from the hamper. Or to finish putting away his things after he works on something. I’m sure you could come up with something, too. Just do it for him–and don’t say a word. Get so good at it that he thinks he’s perfect :) .

Granted, these five ways to improve your marriage are anything but easy. But they are simple. You don’t need to plan, you don’t need to spend money…you simply need to ACT on it.

Today, pick one, then ACT.

What are you going to do today?

Eternal Encouragement Magazine {Gabby Mom Review}

As I’ve spent more time in the trenches of motherhood and at home, I’ve learned that getting encouragement is vital to both surviving the tough times of having little ones at home and in growing as a wife and mother.  Over the years, I’ve searched out many sources of encouragement and they all have their positive and negatives.

I’ve loved being part of the Gabby Mom’s review program because I’ve been able to look at things that might not hit the top of my budget/priority list otherwise.    This month, I got to preview a print issue of Eternal Encouragement’s magazine.    Smaller than I anticipated, it seems to be the “new” magazine format — Catholic Digest has moved to that size as well.

The Eternal Encouragement Magazine is a lot like talking to your girlfriend.   Most of the time you love spending time with her.   And once in a great while, she says something that annoys you.   But because she’s a good person and is otherwise pretty well on the mark, you ignore it.   I had one of those moments in the very first article – Thoughts from the Doodle Bug.   As a Catholic, thoughts that you should try to interpret scripture on your own when people WAY smarter and holier than I have already done it, well, let’s just say I disagree and leave it at that.   I confess, I did have to set it down and walk away for a few days.

Later, I picked up the magazine again, skipped that article :) , and enjoyed the rest of the magazine.  I was treated to some thought-provoking articles about attitude, housekeeping, hospitality, child-rearing and marriage.   I found things that I did pretty well, but still got a new tip or two.   More importantly, I found encouragement in those areas that need work.

The nice part is that it’s all from a godly point of view.   I do have to say though, like any materials that do not have a Nihil Obstat and/or Imprimatur, you need to be continuously growing in your faith to be able to spot things that might be contrary.   And when in doubt, ask your priest.  He will be able to guide you :) .

If you aren’t a super-orthodox Catholic (or maybe just super opinionated ;D), you will probably really like this magazine and not find a single thing “wrong” ever.   It’s really that good.   Subscriptions are available printed and digital and any subscription receives the NEW EE Etc. Web Magazine that is published 8 times a year.  EE Etc. has full magazine articles that are only available to Eternal Encouragement Subscribers via a new online magazine portal.

What are your favorite sources for encouragement?

Disclaimer:   I received a print copy of the Spring 2012 issue in exchange for an honest review as part of the Gabby Mom’s program.    As always, all opinions are my own.

Hero Worship – Speak His Language

Love ? I love love love you.

One of my resolutions for the year is to make my husband feel more like the hero he is. One way that I’m going to do that is to speak his love language. Well, both of them actually.

There are 5 love languages, according to Gary Chapman:

Acts of service (mine)
Gifts (mine)
Time
Touch (hubby)
Words of affirmation (hubby)

Yeah, no similarities there. I’ve known his for years, but with two kids and much less quality time together, it’s more important than ever to make the moments we ARE together count.

If you haven’t already read it, I suggest that you go to the library and give Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman a quick read!

It’s an easy way to make him feel valued.

Do you use the love languages in your relationship?

Note:  I read the version written in 1992.  He came out with a new version in 2010.  I haven’t read it, but I imagine it would be just as useful!
