As One Devil To Another {Book Review & Giveaway}

I adore C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters.   It was one of the first books about faith that I had ever read.   I was mesmerized by the letters between the two devils as they discuss taking down man.    So when I had the opportunity to read As One Devil to Another: A Fiendish Correspondence in the Tradition of C. S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters by Richard Platt, I accepted.

On the plus side, Mr. Platt did a remarkable job of imitating the style of C.S. Lewis’s Screwtape Letters.   I don’t think the substance was quite right.   I enjoyed the book at first but as I began to read passages aloud to my husband to think them over and discuss them, I got the distinct impression that he was remarkably liberal in thought.

He painted several things in a terrible light — business/capitalism, technology, the internet and others.   Since I happen to own a computer company in my offline life, I know quite a lot about business and technology.    I disagree with him completely.   While I agree that some do terrible things in the name of business or with technology, much more good comes of it.   I cannot count the number of times I have used technology to determine my child’s temperature, the internet to find a more holistic cure for her ear infection, and our business provides the means to take care of our family.  Knowing how wrong he was on areas with which I am very familiar makes me very suspect of the rest of his letters.

If you like The Screwtape Letters, you will like the style that As One Devil to Another is written in.   If you like having discussions about politics and life with people who are quite different in opinion from you, you might enjoy this book, too.   Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t recommend it.

If you’d like to win your own copy and see for yourself, I do have a certificate for a free copy that can be redeemed at any christian bookstore.   Open to US addresses only and contest ends at 11:59 pm on 5/29/12.

Discount Catholic Products {Product Review & Giveaway}

In February, Emmy of Discount Catholic Products guest post on How to Spend Valentine’s Day with Your Family.   It was a delight to work with her and when she asked if I was open to doing a product review for her site, I was tickled!

Even better, she had chosen a 12 Inch Our Lady of Grace Statue as the item she would like reviewed.   When it came in, I was kind of in awe that I had something this nice in my house!    You see, we have a family altar.   It’s a bit, well, cheesy.   Above the altar is an heirloom crucifix from my great grandmother.   On the altar?   A dollar store Mary and an old candle :) .

This plaster Our Lady of Grace Statue is hand-painted in Italy in tones of blue and white (traditional Marian colors) and the above picture does not do it justice.  It is absolutely gorgeous in person!   I like that it is not top heavy but balances well on the altar even when the kiddos jostle it–the statue hasn’t been knocked over yet!

Surprising to me was the fact that this substantial and quality statue was well under $100!    I had been putting off the purchase of statues because of the expense.    At $60, I’ll yell a lot quieter when it breaks :) .  Now that I have Our Lady, I think the altar looks a little lopsided — I think that a statue of the Sacred Heart needs to be added, don’t you think?

If you are looking for quality and affordable statues, rosaries, patron saint medals, Catholic gifts or other items, you might want to take a peek at Discount Catholic Products.

Until 4/15, if you like Discount Catholic Products on Facebook, you have the opportunity to win a 24″ Our Lady of Grace Statue (RV $165), an 8.25″ Children with Christ Statue (RV $132) or a Sacred Heart/Miraculous Medal Badge Scapular (RV $86).

Discount Catholic Products has also graciously provided a Sterling Silver St. Christopher Car Visor Clip (RV $57) for a giveaway.   This giveaway ends 4.20.12 and is open to US and Canadian shipping addresses only.   To enter, please use the rafflecopter widget below.

{CLOSED} Gabby, God’s Little Angel {Book Review & Giveaway!}

Sheila Walsh (of God’s Little Princess fame) has started a delightful new picture book series aimed at little girls ages 4-8 starring a little angel named Gabby.  In the first book, Gabby, God’s Little Angel, you are introduced to Gabby.  Gabby is a delightful, talkative, well-meaning but accident prone guardian angel in training.  She is assigned to a little girl very like her named Sophie who has a close call on her pony.

I loved the illustrations in Gabby, God’s Little Angel!  The story was very cute and my almost 4 year old seemed to identify with Sophie and Gabby.  The message of the book really captured her.  I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone with little girls who is trying to find religious books that are fun & cute.
