Even though we have had snow in 8 (!) of the last 12 months in Michigan, we tend to live very seasonally. April & May (mostly May) have been filled with spring activities, the outdoors, and plant & animal life. When I saw one of the Tommy Mommy offerings was for Growing With Jesus, I knew it would work nicely with our spring/summer lifestyle.
Each morning (give or take), we start our day with Growing With Jesus. Growing With Jesus is the perfect devotional for Spring/Summer. It only contains 100 devotions which makes it the perfect length for about a season of use. Each devotion spans a two page spread and includes a bible verse, something to think about, a short prayer prompt, and a cool creature fact. The art is beautifully done with illustrations of animals and nature elements with a scrapbook feel to it.
This is the third time Growing With Jesus has been redesigned & reprinted and I understand why. It’s really is a fabulously fun book. Every day when I read the animal fact, I hear her typical drama-filled 6 year old remark of explanation. I’m trying to break her of the habit of using the particular expression, but at least I know she’s listening! Usually the devotion or the animal fact prompts some comment or discussion from my 6-1/2 year old.
And when I ask if they are ready to listen they both come running to look at the pictures and listen. And we’ve been reading the bible & devotions long enough that my 6 year old can recognize verses & things. Love that!
Overall, I think Growing With Jesus would be a great devotional for any child ages 6-10, especially if they love nature & animals. If you are having a hard time finding a neutral devotional that’s not too “pretty” for boys but not to “boyish” for girls, this is a pretty good option. It includes cute owls & birds, but also lizards and other animals in a very nature colored palette.
