grimms-fairy-tales-usborne-prek-girls-activities

This month the Poppins Book Nook theme was Folktales.  So first, I picked out Grimm’s Fairy Tales from Marie at Usborne Books, THEN I looked to see if it was actually a Folktale.   You know ask forgiveness rather than permission :).

Grimm’s Fairy Tales

Usborne Grimm’s Fairy Tales is a great illustrated collection of Grimm’s Fairy Tales for children.  Most Grimm’s Fairy Tales are, well, grim.  Much to grim for most people & certainly not intended for children, though I think my 6 year old has heard them all.  This illustrated collection of 16 Grimm’s Fairy Tales from Usborne has a great selection of the more child friendly stories.  And they don’t seem to have been changed–which I love.  Of those 16, they were split about 50/50 between ones I had heard of and new ones.  The girls really loved reading these stories and requested The Musicians of Bremen & Rapunzel quite a lot.   We really loved the Usborne illustrated edition of Grimm’s Fairy Tales; I would totally recommend this as your first book of Grimm’s!

Folktale Fun for PreK – 1st

When looking for folktale activities I searched Pinterest first and found this awesome chart that tells the differences in 4 kinds of Folktales.   In case you are wondering, a folktale is basically a timeless story passed down by mouth and fairy tales, fables, myths, legends and tall tales are all kinds of folktales.   Now that we have that out of the way, I’ll share the activity we did…as well as those we considered.

Movie Marathon

Did you know that many Grimm’s Fairy Tales were made into Disney Movies?   While we didn’t do this one (because it *is* summer, theoretically, anyway), my girls would have loved it if we had.   Disney movies based on Grimm’s Fairy Tales include Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, Tangled, Cinderella, The Princess and the Frog and Sleeping Beauty all have a version in Grimm’s Fairy Tales. grimm-app

StoryToys Entertainment Limited Apps

We have several 3D Storybook Apps of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. They have a tendency to be pretty large and so I only have Rapunzel installed right now. The apps are $4.99 each and read the story as well as have an activity to do between each part of the story. They have storybook apps for Rapunzel, Snow White, Hansel & Gretel, Red Riding Hood among other classic fairy tales. grimm-dress-up

Dress Up & Acting

We have girls who are totally into dressing up. Since we have previously been Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood for Halloween, we could easily act out or just play either one. In fact, we have this large red apple toddler toy that they LOVE to use for the poisoned apple. Had I let them watch Snow White, they probably would be playing it. Do you have some dress up clothes for drama-minded kiddos?

Compare & Contrast

In addition to this book of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, we also have individual books of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Rumplestiltskin & more. It could be fun to compare how each version (and any movies) are the same & different. grimm-toys

Toys

We also happen to have Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs and a house for our Little People sets.   And I had been stashing away some Snow White Figurines that I got on clearance from the Disney Store.  Lately, with these posts, I feel like the new toy fairy because I always have something in my toy stash :).     Alas, we didn’t do a lot of these in particular *this* month.  My oldest wasn’t feeling well Friday so we started Memorial Break early and watched Snow White, played with the toys I found in the closet and talked about the witch and her inner beauty (or lack thereof). I had also intended to do more of a education unit with my oldest about a few of the fairy tales we read and I bought 2 packs from Teachers Pay Teachers and I never did print them because they presented the lessons as if fairy tales were DIFFERENT than folktales and not a sub-genre of them.  It turned me off and I never did get any items printed :(.   And they weren’t cheap either, which also irritated me.  Oh well. Want some a book of folktales and GOOD curriculum to go with it?   Keep reading!
