As everyone knows, a good marriage doesn’t happen on accident. You really need to work at it; sometimes harder than others. And sometimes harder than your spouse :). Here are five ways to simply improve your marriage:

1. Simply listen.

When he talks, put your book down or close the lid of your laptop, especially when it’s just the two of you. If you have kids, train them not to interrupt when daddy is talking. It’s a sign of respect and men need respect.

2. Simply obey.

Yeah, I know. This one is soooo hard for me. Last week, hubby requested a total overhaul of toy storage in our home. I figured out how to make it happen (it only took a day) and he was pleased as punch when he came home.

He would much rather have had that fixed than for me to plan elaborate dates! Ask him if there is something that makes him nuts that you could fix for him! Or simply do the next thing he asks, without comment. Or try :).

3. Simply feed him.

You have to cook anyway, so plan to cook something he likes at least once a week. Last year, hubby (and I) came up with a list of 21 favorite meals complete with sides. I keep this in my household notebook to reference when meal planning. Do you know what your spouse likes?

4. Simply love.

Show affection to your hubby. Greet him at the door with a kiss when he returns and give him a better one when he leaves ;). And remember that men express love through you-know-what ;). I’ve been advised that they should have around 5 servings a week. That doesn’t always happen, but it’s better for everyone when it does :)!

5. Simply Serve.

It’s so obnoxious to have to pick up his dirty socks off the floor, two feet from the hamper. Or to finish putting away his things after he works on something. I’m sure you could come up with something, too. Just do it for him–and don’t say a word. Get so good at it that he thinks he’s perfect :).

Granted, these five ways to improve your marriage are anything but easy. But they are simple. You don’t need to plan, you don’t need to spend money…you simply need to ACT on it.

Today, pick one, then ACT.

What are you going to do today?
