WFMW – Keeping Glasses Straight At A Party

Don’t you hate it when you’re at a party and you set you drink down to stop Suzy from squirting Johnny with the hose and you go back to get it and its lost in a sea of 20 other blue plastic cups?

In our neck of the woods, everyone labels their cups with a permanent marker!  They set out permanent markers (out of reach of young children, of course), for everyone to label/decorate their glasses for easy recognition.

It helps in early clean up, too. You can throw out glasses of people who left before the bitter end. Anyway, using a markers to label drinking glasses at gatherings really works for me!

WFMW – Meconium Messes Made Easy!

I learned this trick from my midwife last month and it was so great I just had to share.

The key to making meconium messes manageable is…

olive oil.

Yep, olive oil.  After you are done wiping their little bottom clean, rub on a generous layer of olive oil.  When they have their next sticky nasty meconium poo, it will wipe right off.

So for your next birth, have a bottle of olive oil on hand.  You might need to smuggle it into the hospital, I don’t know, but that Works for Me!

WFMW – Easy Furniture “Repair”

If your house is anything like mine, much of your furniture is of the “some assembly required” variety.   In our house, we gravitate toward black or as close as we can get since REAL furniture with black lacquer is near impossible to find.   I’ve noticed that it doesn’t always keep it’s finish.   In fact, chips and scrapes are near impossible with little ones.   My secret to keeping them looking black (from a distance)?

Don’t tell anyone….

A black Sharpie!

Any time there is a chip or the paint comes off, I just color it black with a sharpie.   This works for brown furniture too, just use the right color brown.   What do you think those expensive furniture markers are?

That works for me!   What works for you?   Link up your tip at We Are That Family!

WFMW – Top 5 Ways to Lessen Morning Sickness

I’m not sure if you noticed my light posting schedule but the reason for it, my personal family issues as it were, was that I am pregnant!   Due to being pregnant 3 times in 7 months, I was laying low and keeping my big mouth shut until I knew this one was a keeper :) .  We pinpointed the problem with the miscarriages (low thyroid) and heard the heartbeat a few weeks ago.  Praise GOD!!!

That being said, I spent several months feeling pretty icky, using the electronic baby-sitter for my 2 yo, and sending the budget completely out the window because food was just gross but I still needed to feed my lovies and eat a little myself.   There were a few things that I noticed that greatly helped my nausea that I didn’t know about last time.

1.   SLEEP!   I understand that because I have a 2 yo who is still napping that I had it pretty good, but knowing just HOW sick I would get without my 2-3 hour nap, well, next time, I might have to get a babysitter in the afternoons just so I can nap.  It made SUCH a huge difference in how I felt.   I probably slept 8-10 hours at night and 1-3 hours in the afternoon.   Completely essential.  Do anything you can to get a nap.  I promise, you won’t regret it!

2.  EAT PROTEIN!   I have got on my Bradley Birth soapbox before, but the diet recommends tons of protein to try and avoid preeclampsia.   It works wonders for nausea, too.  I tried lots of different types of protein but found that a chunk of cheddar cheese did the trick.  Every time.  I must have eaten a pound a week.  I may not ever eat it again :) .  So try lots of type of protein and see which one makes you feel human again.

3.  EAT FREQUENTLY!   If your stomach gets empty, you will feel sick.  Eat something every hour or two.   Make it something you don’t have to cook if that makes you feel better.  Fruit salad, canned soup, meat/cheese/cracker tray, yogurt, kefir, etc.   Whatever it takes, budget be buggered; it’s a season, not a lifestyle.  I normally eat real food but I must confess we just finished up a bag of chicken nuggets that I bought because it didn’t make me gag when I “cooked” it.

4.  DRINK WATER!    This one should be a no-brainer but when you are pregnant you require so much extra fluid.  Any time I wasn’t drinking enough, I could feel it.   If water suddenly tastes funny to you (it does to me), try making it warmer or colder.  Maybe add a little fruit juice to it.   Usually I like tepid water but if it’s not super hurts-your-teeth cold now, I don’t like the taste.

5.  SEA-BANDS.   Those ugly little elastic bracelets with the knobs that hit your pressure point when you get sea-sick or car-sick.   Yeah, those babies.  I lived with them for WEEKS.  I still keep them in my purse just in case.

Those were my top 5 ways to lessen morning sickness (which always hit me in the afternoon or evening — ugh!).

What about you?   What are your “tell everyone you meet” ways to mitigate that icky feeling you get in the first trimester?   Share in the comments!

WFMW – Three Keys to Successful Entertaining

wfmw

Yesterday, I had a HUGE “Christmas” dinner for my family because my in-laws came up for a few days.   I made a ham, turkey, squash, mashed potatoes, green beans (not casserole), stuffing, and bought rolls & pies.

I did 3 things to make the dinner go smoothly.   First, I made sure the kitchen was clean and the dishes were washed before hand.  I needed a lot of them to cook the big dinner and they were dirty from the big brunch I had on Sunday.

Second, I had a plan.  I knew what I was going to book, what dish I would use and when I would cook it so that it all got warm in time for dinner.

Third, I cleaned up as I went. I know this is SO elementary that I’m really the only one who needed to be told right?  Yeah, that’s what I thought.  But seriously, I am the LAZIEST person in the world.   And even I pull it off.   I had all the dishes in the dishwasher or handwashed within an hour of finishing dinner last night and sat down to eat dessert.

How did I do that?   I’ll add a freebie tip- I removed all extra junk from my kitchen.  I just got rid of everything that I didn’t use, didn’t use often enough, or had multiples of for no reason.    I literally dirtied EVERY DISH I OWN cooking, serving and eating yesterday.   And I only filled 1-1/2 dishwashers and did a load of dishes.  Did I mention that it was cleaned up in an hour?  Leftovers away and everything?  LESS STUFF is the key to my sanity.
