Weekly Wrap Up

Weekly Wrap Up – Kindergarden Start Edition {4.20.12}

So since my last Weekly Wrap Up post, we have been randomly sort of doing lots of preschool packs and trying to add in some phonics and a Catholic Catechism curriculum that I couldn’t like no matter how many times I tried to pick it back up.  Add that to a February where I was effectively out of commission for 3 weeks with a hideous cold and we just did a lot of random, too easy workbooks.

Something needed to change.  Lots of things did, actually.  Our original (revised) plan was destined for the junk heap :) . First, I decided that we needed to start the Kindergarten work.  Yes, she’s only 4 yrs & 3 months.  BUT.  She’s so ready.  She counts well and can do math in her head better than I.  She knows most letter sounds but needs practical application — an isolated letter review was NOT working and she really wanted to do read.  Our catechism program sucked and neither of us liked it.

I also had the return of fertility after nursing amenorrhea.  Given my fertility, another baby will probably be coming in the next 12-18 mos.  That being said, we also decided that we need to school year round because the 3rd month of pregnancy & 2 months after, I’m useless.  There is our “summer break.”

We also finally came up with a time of day that works for us.  We do the easy stuff while Itty Bitty is awake and the harder stuff while she’s asleep.

Here are the curriculum changes we made:

We only kept 2 things:
MCP Math: Level K
Little Folks Number Practice & Little Folks Letter Practice.

Our current schedule looks like this:

  • Phonics/Reading
  • Math
  • RRSP/RRSK
  • Road Trip USA

Plus on T/Th, we do First Language lessons & World’s Greatest Artists.  On W/F, we do Little Saints Number & Letter Practice and World’s Greatest Composers.

It takes about 2-2.5 hours per day and there are PLENTY of interruptions! Sometimes she wants to do more & sometimes she gets silly and I know it’s time to stop.  Since her maturity may not be up to her knowledge, I don’t push it when she’s done.

Since we officially started doing kindergarten work, we have gotten a lot done!

Reading- With the new readers, she is fluently reading books 1-4.  She might want to do more, but we do 2 a day–a repeat & a new one.  She’s so proud of herself!!

MCP Math – We got through lesson 1-5 this week with only a minor meltdown that had nothing to do with the math–it was that she didn’t write her name well enough :) .

Raising Rock Stars (P/K) – We did half of the preschool activities & half of the kindergarten activities and she had it memorized in a snap!

Road Trip USA – We got through the whole section about the country and are ready to start the NE states next week.

First Language Lessons – We have gotten through lesson 5 and I was amazed that she had Catepillar memorized!  I sure didn’t!  And she’s been reciting it as she plays.  A little sponge!

Little Saints Letter Practice & Number Practice – She did 2-3 lessons in each book (1 & 2 and A – C). The number two frustrated her and we had to come back to it the next day.  We broke it down a little further and she made great progress.

World’s Greatest Artists – we got through the first several lessons on Picasso.  I was impressed that she remembered who we were reading about. We added in a board book of Picasso art that we had.

World’s Greatest Composers –  this week we got through Lessons 1 & 2.  Lil’ Bit LOVED the notebooking portions.  A little young to do it all on her own, but I let her do as much as she has patience for :) .  I think she liked the music, too.

We did some extra stuff, too.  We have a ton of Weekly Readers we didn’t get to this year.  This week we looked at the issues on transportation and wind.  Wind was super interesting to her and we spent lots of time looking at pictures and movies of tornados & hurricanes.

We also did pieces from several Easter packs and some rainbow preschool pages, too.

Wow!   Almost 1000 words to say that we had to change it all up and had a good week.   What about you?

Weekly Wrap-Up {2.9.12}

This week

We finally got back on the wagon after our company left — I think we did school every day. No small feat in this house!

Lil’ Bit just turned 4 and we did several things this week.

We spent a lot of time playing Sight Words Go Fish. I’ve tried 2 different learn to read programs and they both bore her. I just ordered the reading stuff from Peace Hill Press which I think will suit her better. I’ll let you know how that goes!

We also did some activities from Homeschool Creations. We worked on her Preschool Pack for The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.

We did work from the Valentine’s Day packs from both Homeschool Creations and Over the Big Moon.

We worked on valentines for far reaching grandparents and uncles.

And we worked on Raising Rock Stars Preschool letter E using the book My A B C Bible Verses. When I first got the book, I wasn’t thrilled with it, but the RRSP materials make it totally worthwhile.

Next Week

We still have lots of Valentines pages left. There are plans for valentines day treats & dinner for our cousin who just had a baby. We will probably do another RRSP verse and hopefully work through our Weekly Reader backlog. Maybe some nature study, too. We will see.

I’m finding that it works much better to not plan too far ahead.   Not sure why.  I’m the uber-planner.

Any thoughts?

Weekly Wrap Up: Split Week

One of the things I love about homeschooling is the ability to be flexible. Lil’ Bit spent a few days with Grandma & Grandpa last week and I had cleaning to catch up on so we will split the week over two.

Last week, we talked about 4 of the 5 senses in Little Saints Preschool. We also talked about the 10 commandments but I don’t think much sunk in. Luckily it will covered 2 more times :) .

We did a lot of extra pirate activities in preparation for International Talk Like A Pirate Day. It helped, too, that I got all that printed & then my printer broke. We skipped “C” for the week.

We also went to ‘school’ at the Nature Center where she learned about Sunflowers & seeds.

She also LOVED the long red rods, although I’m thinking she is too old for those, too. Any ideas for what to do with them?

This week we talked a little about the last sense–touch.   When she comes back from Grandma’s (probably Saturday) we will finish our weekly reader, do our musical instrument & artist study, and work on the Alphabet Virtues worksheets.

Our First (Real) Week of Homeschool!

We did it!   Our first week of homeschool.   Four days in a row and everything.

Those of you who saw my original curriculum post can rest easy.  I revised my plan and it went great.   Well, as great as it could have with a 3.5 year old & a 9 mo old :) .  Let’s be real.

Here is what we did.

Catechesis – Who Am I?   We got through Lesson 1 – The Trinity.   We even did both worksheets.

Preschool – We did the first unit in Little Saints – God Made Me Special.   We even did most of the art & learning projects.  Favorite book was Angel in the Waters.   Such a precious book!

Pre-Reading -   We talked about what sound the letter A makes, put the A on the coconut tree, and did a bunch of A projects of various types.

Montessori – We didn’t get to the rice bucket, but we did bead lacing (too easy for her, I think) and play-doh.

Extras – We even did some “extras” today — Music Study – Violin, Artist Study – Rousseau, and the first Weekly Reader of the year (back to school).

I was surprised that it didn’t take long to do what felt like a TON of stuff (poems, stories, worksheets, art projects, games, etc), but only took 2 hours.   And that two hours was mostly keeping Itty Bitty amused so I could work with Lil’ Bit.  Damage control, if you will :) .   I also did a lot of prep during this time, too — It wasn’t all ready to go when we started.

We skipped some things which I’m okay with because this should be fun at this age.   I also learned not to get the Montessori stuff out until I’m ready or nothing else will get done!   Loves the hands-on; I may have to add more later.

Also, we went to a birthday party and to the nature center during two days, built a fence during the other two (so grandparents were here) and we STILL got it done.   Very excited!

See what others are doing at Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers!

Weekly Wrap-Up #1

We started trying to do some preschool for what feels like the 40th time with Lil’ Bit who is now 3. Last week pretty much went to the dogs. We are taking two weeks to do a weeks worth of “work” as we try to find out where we fit things into our day with energy levels, baby, and ability to focus.

Religion

So far, we are doing Catechism discussions while eating breakfast and are talking about creation, using My First Catholic Bible and Who Am I? (CHC).

“Reading & Math”

Books are read during Itty Bitty’s mid morning nap. This week our focus is the letter A & the number 1, as well as counting to 10.  We’ve been using the AlphaTales books as well as The Sesame Street Library & Sesame Street Treasury (all purchased off eBay).

Art & Music

We listen to Making Music Praying Twice & our composer of the month while playing independently. We also read about our artist of the month once as well.

“Projects”

In our house, all fun/educational PLANNED activities are called projects :) .  We usually do these after lunch…when Itty Bitty naps.  We’ve been making valentines for grandmas & grandpas & godparents for about a week.   I forgot to take pictures because I wanted to make sure we got them in the mail.  Blah.

We also made the angel from Catholic Icing.

And the Our Lady of Lourdes grotto from Catholic Icing as well :) .

We also used some prewriting worksheets from Confessions of a Homeschooler and some workbooks we had.
