Five Tips For First Time Runners

five-tips-for-first-time-runners

For the second time in my life, I have decided to start running.  Before I had kids, I never considered myself an athlete, though I had become one.  In a former “life” I was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, frequent participator in pilates, yoga, step, kickboxing, got 2 personal trainer certifications (ACE & NASM), and decided to conquer my lifelong nemesis–running.  I was the fat 40-minute-miler in grade school.  The year before I got pregnant, I ran my first 5k.

Now I’m running again–this time pushing 80 pounds of kids and stroller!  Having just completed my first week back on the running track, I was thankful that I remembered these five tips.

1.  A good sports bra.

Yeah, you can exercise in a regular bra, but it doesn’t feel as good.  And it’s not pretty if you are well-endowed or nursing.  Just keepin’ it real ;) .

2.  Good running shoes.

Go to a specialty running shoe store.  Whatever chain store is in the mall isn’t it.  A good salesman will ask you to walk around and recommend a shoe based upon your walk/foot.  Usually such places are locally owned so the service is better and the prices are about the same.

3.  A plan.

Last time around, I used a 5k program out of a book.  This time around, I use the Ease into 5k app for my iPhone.  No smart phone?  No problem!  Use a 5k program from online & buy a Timex Ironman watch to track your time.  They have super cute ones now!

4.  Water!

Drink a glass of water before you leave and carry a water bottle to drink during & after your run.  You should drink 1 glass before, 1 during, and 1 after.

5.  A snack.

I’ve found that I cannot do ANY exercise on an empty stomach or a full stomach.  Eating a little protein works best for me.  I usually eat a 1-2 crackers with peanut butter.  My husband likes an apple.  Chances are, you will need SOMETHING.  With some experimentation, you will find out works for you.

Above all, listen to your body.  Running is hard and muscle aches are completely different from injuries.  Take it easy at first and build up from there.

Do you exercise regularly?

Resolutions 2012

Seattle New Years Eve 2011

Image via Wikipedia

So while we were driving down to Florida (on the day they slept all day), I thought about my goals for the year.   Knowing that I always want to improve in more areas than humanly possible, I also broke them up so that I only have to focus on 3 things per month.

That being said, here are my goals for 2012.

Spiritual
1. More regular prayer time — eventually a time tithe (1.5-2 hrs).
2. More frequent daily mass.
3. Monthly confession
4. Eucharistic adoration
5. Observe first Friday/Saturday devotions
6. Daily Rosary
7. Virtue study

Personal
1. Weekly Night Out
2. Blog as able
3. Regular haircuts
4. Exercise 3x/week
5. Eat healthy

Spouse
1. Love language focus
2. Other love language focus
3. Start monthly date theme

Parenting
1. Cultivate patience
2. Consistent discipline
3. Read aloud more daily
4. Teach when they want to learn
5. Spend more time outside

Provider
1. Keep the budget
2. Keep a cleaning schedule
3. Have enough clothes–not an excess
4. Make house more functional, less cluttered.

Hospitality/Relationships/Character

1. Invite friends for dinner monthly
2. Only throw birthday parties
3. Take interest in others
4. Be more positive
5. Do corporal works of mercy
If you’ve read my posts about A Mother’s Rule of Life, you may notice that I’ve kept the same order of priorities.  I’ll be sharing more blog posts in (hopefully) the same order of focus.  So look forward to more faith and marriage posts this year.

How about you?  Do you do resolutions?

Though it wasn’t originally my intent to offer up a ton of printables, I use them constantly and have been making them like mad.   If they are useful for me, they might be useful for you, too.

This time, I have a list of things to remember to take to the gym.    I cannot tell you the number of times I have forgotten something I needed.  It’s enough to drive a person nutty!

I present to you, the Gym Packing List:

#Mamavation Monday #17

It is with some regret that I’m going to withdraw, temporarily, from the Sistahood. After 4 months with a 6 lb loss total, I just feel that this is not the time for me to focus on this like I should.

Between the (hopeful) sale of our house, current status of our business, trying to start homeschool stuff again, possible career change and move, and my new website, there just isn’t time to focus on it like I need to. I still have 2200 sq ft of JUNK that needs to be sorted so that when it’s time to pack & have the yard sale, I don’t need to do it all at once. It’s crunch time for all our balls in the air. Hopefully, when they all fall, I will be able to focus on me.

Au Revoir!
