I had never made homemade flour tortillas until this week and they are sooooooo much better than store bought that I may never buy them again.   Ever.  For any reason!    They were easy too (which should go without saying, right?).   And the biggest reason?  They cost about $0.50 for 8!   Far cry from $2-6 for pack at the grocery store!

My recipe comes from More-With-Less, my new favorite cookbook.

In a mixing bowl, combine:

  • 2 c. unsifted flour
  • 1 tsp. salt

With a pastry blender, cut in:

  • 1/4 c. lard or shortning

Blend to a fine consistency and gradually add:

  • 1/2 c. lukewarm water.

Mix with fork to make a stiff dough.   Form into a ball and knead thoroughly on a lightly floured board/counter until smooth and flecked with air bubbles.  Cover with plastic wrap and refridgerate for 4-24 hours before using.   Let dough return to room temp before rolling out–could take awhile.   I brought it out an hour before hand and that wasn’t enough.   Allow ample time to warm up–it might help with rolling it thin & even.

Divide dough into 8 or 11 balls depending on the size tortilla desired.  Roll as thin as possible between sheets of waxed paper.   Drop onto a very hot griddle (ungreased).   Cook until freckled on one side.   Life edge, turn & bake on other side.   Should be white and opaque with brown specks.

Can be wrapped airtight and refridgerated or frozen. To serve later, place in tightly covered baking dish and warm in oven, or fry briefly in hot shallow oil.

So what are you waiting for?   Go to it!

Thanks for the recipe. Wanted to do this for a long time and just haven’t. We eat a lot of homemade refried beans, which we fix like burritos, so this will be great to try!

I love tortillas. They are my go-to staple. I’ve never tried making my own but it does’n’ sound too hard.

Thanks for sharing your recipe! I make my own tortillas but am always on the look out a newer, better recipe. I might have to check out that cookbook too!

My recipe is from MWL too – you can use 100% whole wheat flour IF you get “white whole wheat”. King Arthur sells it. Don’t try it w/ traditional whole wheat – sooo hard to roll out!
