Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from LitFuse Publicity in exchange for an honest review.

I cannot tell you how much procrastinating I did about reading Distortion. I was just not in the mood to read anything & a suspense novel just wasn’t appealing to me. I was even CLEANING! But when I finally say down Sunday afternoon to read it, I was hooked and finished it that night before bed.

Written by Terry Blackstock, Distortion is the story of a woman whose husband is gunned down in a seemingly random shooting. After his death she starts to uncover evidence that it may not be a random shooting after all. Her husband, a wealthy physician, had a side occupation. And a whole alternate life, to boot. When elements of his past threaten her children, her siblings step in to help her unravel the secrets and bring an end to the past.

This was a spellbinding book. While it was technically a murder mystery, it was really more of a suspense novel, getting to the bottom of her husband’s secret life & extricating her family from it. I was so swept from scene to scene that I never got around to trying to figure out what I didn’t know. Even if I had, I don’t think I could have guessed, and that is my favorite kind of book. It allows me to enjoy it without rushing to see if I’m right :).

The major characters were well written. The older boy was a little annoying, but I think it was pretty close to how a boy would act in those situations. I liked how the faith piece was worked into the story naturally. I was also glad that the most heart-wrenching part was wrapped up quickly–I get really into the books I read :). The very final scene surprised me the most, but it shouldn’t have; it was totally in character.

Long story short, I was sucked in by every part of Distortion. The setting, the details, the characters, the plot–it all made for a great read. It even had the ability to overcome my feelings of not wanting to read a suspense novel and making me VERY glad I had read it. Very well done.

I would recommend it to any lover of clean suspense, male or female. There is little romance & lots of fun techy details that would make it appeal to anyone. I don’t think I’d consider it okay for teenagers though. They don’t need to soak in adult situations, ramifications, drugs and such; it IS still a suspense novel after all.
