A historical novel taking place in England when balls were common and wealthy daughters were introduced to society during the London season, The Dancing Master, takes place in rural England.

So much more than a simple romance, The Dancing Master is the story of a rural village. The Lady of the village has outlawed dancing. After a scandal surrounding a well-known London dancing school, the family moves in with a relative in the village. Unbeknownst to the young dancing & fencing instructor, his services are unwelcome there. Secrets woven through decades start to come out & turn the village and everyone in it upside down.

The Dancing Master was one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read in awhile. Julie Klassen did a marvelous job of unraveling a generation of secrets, each one explaining a myriad of other pieces of the story. The story progressed slowly enough that it was a joy to savor. Sometimes, I get carried away and end up skimming to find out what happened because I just. can’t. stand. it! That didn’t happen with The Dancing Master.

The characters were all complex and believable and I enjoyed the aspects of the time period, place & relationship of the classes of people in England. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, especially fans of England’s monarchy. There was plenty of fighting, fencing & horsemanship to go with the romance & dancing. It was also clean enough for an older teenager, I think. Preview for your home & standards, though.
