Earlier this summer, I had requested a few books from Paraclete Press.  One of the titles they had suggested was Angels for Kids.  And it wasn’t printed yet so I totally forgot.  Until it came during Advent.

Which was great because we never did have it together enough to do our Jesse Tree & Advent devotional but we DID enjoy this short book about angels.   It worked really well since angels are all over the Nativity from the Annunciation to the shepherds to the Wise Men.

Written by Donna Marie Cooper O’Boyle, this tiny (74 page) book is packed with everything children need to know about angels.  It was a good introduction for ME!  The first chapter is kind of Angels 101.  What they are are and how they were created.  The second tells about what angels do and what the bible days about them.  Subsequent chapters share what they may look like, how some fell, and more about Archangels & Guardian Angels.  The book ends with information on feast days, shrines, and prayers.

I read Angels for Kids aloud to my (nearly) 6 year old and she was very interested and remembered many of the stories from the Bible.  After reading this, we added the Guardian Angel prayer as well as another from the book to our morning prayer time.

It’s a very conversational book that really unwraps Angels very simply.  It’s great for anyone looking to get a biblical introduction to angels.  It is written by a Catholic and so there are references to the Mass, Popes, and Marian apparitions.  But it is very biblically referenced for others who consider that important.

It IS written for children, and she addresses the reader with questions like, “isn’t it amazing that one day you will see countless Angels in heaven?”  To me, that’s a little annoying, but Lil’ Bit didn’t mind.  Just something to keep in mind if you are reading it for yourself–or out loud :).  Overall, Angels for Kids is a very good book.  We learned more about angels than we knew before, and I’ve been a Catholic for all of my 33 years :).
