I recently finished the last of the Quilts of Love series that I agreed to review (you can read the previous reviews here and here).  What a great series!  The newest book, Tempest’s Course, is set in modern times in New England.

A woman, a textile restorer, is invited to bid on a job of restoring a Mariner’s circle quilt that has been through a fire among other things. Desperate for the job, she takes it, even with the stipulation that she restores it inside the mansion.  After moving in, she discovers an old diary while exploring the old home.  The diary and the quilt become inexplicably intertwined as she is curious about the story behind fixing the quilt, her mysterious employer & the empty mansion.  Add the handyman/gardener and you have quite the puzzling situation.

Tempest’s Course was also a very good book.  There were a few parts that could have used a little more finesse, in my opinion.  The footsteps upstairs was one.  The denouement was another.  The guy who was the antagonist was barely there with a foreshadowing comment or two until he just snapped.

I adored the people and the setting and she wove the history of the quilt & diary with the present very well.  The gardener & his family as well as the main character’s past were well-written as well.  I wish there had been more detail with the family history, but it would have been a much longer book.

Overall, Tempest’s Course was a pretty good book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys diaries, genealogy, early American history or even just a good, clean story.  She hit a perfect balance of clean but not preachy.
