It was one of my (mostly forgotten) goals for the year to learn more about the Blessed Virgin Mary.  When the opportunity came up to review Donna Marie Cooper O’Boyle’s newest book The Miraculous Medal: Stories, Prayers, and Devotions, I decided this would be a great place to start. I have a Miraculous medal, but I know next to nothing about it.  The Miraculous Medal had almost everything I ever wanted to know about it.

The first two chapters tell the story of St. Catherine, the woman to whom the Medal was revealed.  The next two tell about her visions until the medal began to be propagated.  It may sound a little boring but she did a fabulous job with the story.  I was spellbound and devoured nearly the whole book one night.  I was so taken with her story of not only St. Catherine but the events of the world during that time, that I started a timeline on my phone, which I’ve been meaning to do for weeks. The rest of the book covered miracles attributed to Mary through wearing the Miraculous Medal.

It includes the story of the Jewish man who made a complete conversion after being dared to wear the medal & say the Memorare, which I’ve heard before.  Ms. O’Boyle also discusses how she came to meet Bl. Mother Theresa and was re-introduced to the Miraculous Medal.  Finally, we hear her stories of how the Miraculous medals have affected people she has met all over the globe.

This was a short, easy read on the history & miracles associated with the miraculous medal.  It was very interesting and I was fascinated to read about how world events impacted St. Catherine’s life & visions.

If you have wanted to learn more about Mary, Marian apparitions or even just church & saint history, The Miraculous Medal is a great book.  Short & easy to read and digest, it’s ideal for any busy Catholic.  So you know, all of us :).
