This year has been the year of fabulous children’s Christmas literature in our house. For years I’ve heard of these 3 books, but I’ve finally decided to invest in them. What a worthwhile investment in such beautifully written & illustrated stories.
The Miracle of St. Nicholas
The first beautifully written book we read this year was The Miracle of St. Nicholas. I bought it just before the Feast of St. Nicholas thinking it was about him. It wasn’t, but was a fabulous story about a church in Russia. When the communists came through, churches of any faith were not allowed. Afterward, it took sometime for people to return to their churches. This is a story of St. Nicholas’ church in one such town & the miracle of preparing the church for Mass on Christmas Day. A beautifully written and illustrated story. The church images were reminiscent of Eastern icons, including St. Nicholas. Love, love, LOVE it. And we found that we live within an hour of the author — how cool is that!?!
The Gift of The Magi
I remember reading The Gift of the Magi in Mrs. Lamp’s English class. Maybe 10th grade? I loved the story then, but how much can a self-absorbed 14 year old REALLY get it. Enter 33 year old mom of three. We had gotten a strawberry shortcake Christmas book as a “tooth fairy” request that was a knock-off of this story. When Amazon had their 30% off any book coupon during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday craziness, I knocked the P. J. Lynch Classic Christmas Collection off of my list.
If you haven’t read The Gift of the Magi it’s a story about a husband and a wife who are pretty poor but love each other very much. In order to get their spouse a deserving gift, they sell what means most to them–her hair & his pocket watch. And they buy each other a set of combs and a watch chain. Yep. Written in wonderfully flowy and wordy language, the version illustrated by PJ Lynch is gorgeous. Well worth it!!
The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey
I had never read The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey, also illustrated by PJ Lynch, until this year. It is also a part of the Classic Christmas Collection. Jonathan Toomey was a grumpy old curmudgeon of a woodcarver. His wife and baby passed away many years prior. A widow & her son come to him to replace her nativity set, which was lost when they moved. Over the course of the weeks that it takes him to make it, he regains his faith with the help of the widow and her son. Very subtle, very beautiful, very good read. We adore this book also.
