This month, our family received a beautiful padded board book just right for little hands–The Story of Christmas. It’s just the right size for even little hands at about 6×7, complete with a little handle.

My intent was to put it in my baby boys stocking (he will be 5.5 mos on the Feast of St. Nicholas), but my 3 & 5 year old are having NO part of that. Obviously, this book appeals to all ages.

The Story of Christmas is a quality board book with sturdy pages & binding. The illustrations are lovely. They almost seem three dimensional in a way. I wouldn’t call the originals mixed-media, but it appears that the background are drawn with clip-art or stickers placed on the background. It gives the viewer the impression that it might be three dimensional or textured, though it’s not.

The story is also very well done. Rhyme is always popular, but hard to do well. Fiona Boon did a great job with the rhythm, making it enjoyable to read aloud (over and over and over).

Far away, some wise men
Saw a star, huge and bright.
They set out to follow it
On that very night.

It’s a wonderful gift for the child in your life this Christmas. While The Story of Christmas is intended for the very small (ages 0-3), even older siblings would enjoy listening. It’s also the perfect size for a stocking if the socking isn’t super small.

Good luck!!

Last year my son wanted to read The Gingerbread Boy over and over again. We get new books every holiday season so I’m sure it’ll be something different this year. This would be a great book for him. I think he’d really enjoy it!

My kids don’t have a favorite yet, but I love The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey.
