For some reason I felt drawn to read The Christmas Quilt from the Quilts of Love series before Aloha Rose, then had to stop when I realized the other one needed to be posted first :).  As I mentioned last week, I was excited to be able to review these books.  I’m not sure if its because I get to live vicariously through them or what.  You see, I hate sewing.  But I’d love to make a quilt.  I don’t get it either.

The Christmas Quilt is an Amish story.  Two Amish women, sisters-in-law are both pregnant.  One, a nurse, is due last & is making a quilt for the new babies.  A traditional quilt for little ones, it held little appliqué Dutch boys & girls in the squares.

There are complications with the pregnancy and the sister-in-law is transferred to a hospital in Philadelphia that can help keep her babies as long as possible.  It happens to be the hospital that the nurse trained at.  While the SIL was in the hospital, they modified the quilt pattern.  She was inspired to assign a story of a virtue to each of the boy & girl patches.

As her hospital stay lengthened and the two women worked on the quilt, they had woven together the stories of many people & many virtues as they awaited the newborn babies.

The Christmas Quilt was a beautiful story.  I felt for the woman in the hospital who felt distanced from her husband as she changed during pregnancy.  The story of the quilt & its virtuous stories were lovely and I will probably not forget them.  The changes that the various characters has during the stay were believable though a lot seemed to happen in just two weeks with bit characters that were hardly touched on.

Overall, I enjoyed it very much.  It was a good Amish story.  The quilt was woven quite inextricably into the story and the main characters were lovely.  I would not call it much of a romance unless being reconciled to your love counts :).
