This summer, I was blessed to have been invited to review a book from CatholicFamilyGifts.com.   As the name implies CatholicFamilyGifts.com was created as an online store that embodies faith items for your family.  They run their store on 6 core values — Family, Committment, Faith, Excellence, Community, and Love & Joy.  I don’t know if they planned it that way, but there is one for each of their 6 children.   They have lovely items, reasonably priced, many of which we received as gifts or already own.

The book they sent to me was The Catholic Encyclopedia for Children.   This book has been a lovely addition to our Catholic book collection.   Its a beautiful hardcover book about 9″x12″ and 3/4″ thick.  Intended for ages 4-7 (-ish), it’s a great introduction to not just bible stories, but to the basics & beginnings of the Catholic faith.

In fact, we used this book during circle time with my 3 year old & 5 year old.  Since they knew most of the bible stories, we went right into the sections about the history of the church.  The Catholic Encyclopedia for Children covers church history from the time of Jesus through the discovery of the new world, hitting the high points of history, the Church & its saints.  It would make an excellent introduction to history for a Kindergartener.

The section about the basics of the faith was wonderful as well!   It covers our beliefs about the pope, shares the basics of the setup of the church & the Mass, and even includes bits of theology (like the Holy Trinity), prayers, Sacraments, the liturgical year and more.

The Catholic Encyclopedia for Children is the best book I’ve seen of its kind.   I could do without most of the bible stories since nearly all bible storybooks have them, but I do appreciate the reverence given to Mary, that most Protestant materials gloss over — this book included the Assumption!   There isn’t so much text that it overwhelms, but there is enough to do a good job of really getting to the heart of Catholicism.   And the illustrations are beautiful.

I would recommend this book to anyone with children from preschool to just prior to first communion.  Its really a great resource for any Catholic Family.  And if you are looking for a place to buy Catholic Gifts for your children, might I suggest CatholicFamilyGifts.com?  What better way to put your money where your mouth is than to buy from Catholic families and organizations this holiday season?   If you are like me & out of ideas, check out their new Catholic items page to see what’s new!
