Recently, I had been offered the opportunity to review The Homegrown Preschooler: Teaching Your Kids in the Places They Live through the TOS Review Crew and I thought it would have some great ideas to do with my almost 3 & 5 year olds this year. While I have tons of things pinned & bookmarked, having a book to get ideas from works better for when I don’t get to spend much time on the computer.

Homegrown Preschooler

Homegrown Preschooler by Kathy H Lee and Leslie M Richards is a large, colorful paperback book of ideas, tips and tricks for using everyday objects to teach preschoolers. The first half of the book talks about early education & learning, as well as time, organization & seasonal tips. Covering a miriad of activities such as home life, gross & fine motor skills, and sensory fun, this book doesn’t only contain tips for teaching your child but includes recipes, real-life experiences &even worksheets to help you get started. Or alternately, that you have several activities ready to distract them :). Homegrown Preschooler is available from Gryphon House for $29.95.

Likes & Dislikes

I really enjoyed this book. It’s beautiful with big glossy pages and tons of pictures. It feels like a blog, but you can puruse it on your sabbath, if you choose. It’s like a “best of” for preschool activities from all educational theories (Montessori, Charlotte Mason, etc). I love that its limited because I could get sucked into 7 hours on Pinterest and never do a thing.

With this book, I worked on the activities and made a short list of projects to do soon–like the milk & color experiment on page 116 & draw your shadow on page 163.  I also started to work on some home life activities and it reminded me of several activities that I have ready but forgot about like playing with nuts & bolts.

Summary

Overall, I really enjoyed The Homegrown Preschooler: Teaching Your Kids in the Places They Live. Its beautiful & quality (I’m a sucker for NICE books). And the content is awesome. If you know someone who wants to do preschool at home, or even just needs ideas for entertaining little ones, but doesn’t have the Internet or is low on time, this would be a great book! It’s also great from a budgetary standpoint. You don’t need a lot of special equipment or expensive curriculum. It’s broad but simple. I like simple :).

I am so thrilled with your kind review. I would be so appreciative if you would cut and paste your review onto Amazon. I am trying to get the word out about our book, and am hoping a few more reviews on Amazon will encourage people to try it!
    Blessings,
    Lesli
