I have found that the best way to make sure I keep my top priorities in line is to read about them constantly so that I don’t lose sight of them in my super busy every day.  I have a whole shelf of marriage books and recently added The Marriage of Your Dreams: A Woman’s Guide to Understanding Her Man to them.

Written by Rick Johnson, author of various marriage and parenting books, The Marriage of Your Dreams is a great book about how men work and what makes them tick.   As Dr. Laura says, men are simple.   Because of differences between men and women, many times it just isn’t natural for us to meet the needs of our men without effort.   The Marriage of Your Dreams is a great reminder of what needs we need to meet for our men.

He covers 12 different areas of a man’s life, beginning with HIS MOTHER.  After all, that’s pretty much where he began, right?   And many the wife has had to fight to be top dog in the ring.   So he explains about his mother & father and how his family unit had an influence on how he is now.   Rick Johnson also discusses men & relationships, communication, work, his needs, emotions, and wants in a women.   Never one to shy away from conflict or hard topics, he also talks about sexuality and cheating.

It’s been a LONG time since I’ve read it, but this book has the feel of Men are From Mars, Women are from Venus.  But only sort of.  This book is a little less self-deprecating and a little more humorous.  It also has a much more positive vibe and is MUCH less secular.   He actually talks about how men without faith have a hard time doing the right thing in difficult circumstances.

Overall, I really liked this book.  It was a great reminder of what it is that men really need.  There are several I always forget to make an effort on — respect, admiration, making him feel like he’s NEEDED as a man.   I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to improve their marriage or just wants a light, easy-to-read refresher on her hubby.

Available October 2012 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.
