I was recently offered the opportunity to review a new series by Summerside called American Tapestries and they sent two titles, Where the Trail Ends by Melanie Dobson and Queen of the Waves by Janice Thompson.

The first book, Where the Trail Ends is a story of a young woman’s journey through the American West along the Oregon Trail.   She, her father and brother make the arduous journey WALKING (!) the Oregon Trail from Iowa to Oregon with a company of others.   Over the course of the story, she loses her father and is separated from the rest of the travelers.

In trying to escape a wolverine, she gets herself into a heap of trouble and is rescued by an employee of the Hudson Fur Trading Company.   But he is no ordinary employee.  He is heir to the current president and a Lord of England.   And he’s betrothed; and the only one who can save her brother.

The other was Queen of the Waves, a story about the sailing of the Titanic.    A women of class was about to be married off to a business associate for the sake of a merger of the two companies.   She is in love with the gardener and when her mother plans to send her off on the Titanic to her Grandmother in the states, she concocts a plan to send someone in her place and elope with her gardener.    And then her whole plan starts to fall apart.

There were several things that I liked about this new series of historical romance novels.    First, the historical detail was very rich.  The second was that unlike many historical romances that are extremely easy reads and pretty predictable, these were a little meatier.  I am a pretty quick reader and I could take just one of them on a trip and probably not finish the whole thing (unless I had a TON of time at my disposal which doesn’t happen much with a 4.5 yr old and a 2 yr old).   The other thing was that the books are very heavy in the story.  They are almost more of a historical novel first, with the romance secondary.

Overall, I would highly recommend these books to any woman (they are still romances, after all) who has an interest in history or likes to read rich historical romances.   They were delightful to read and had some real story to them that allowed time to savor them.    And they are of the clean variety with a little God added.

In fact, I was literally up until the 11th hour to finish Queen of the Waves before today’s deadline.    I didn’t expect them to take so much time for me to read (remember, I read/skim quickly).  I can’t wait to see what books are released next!
