I don’t do a lot of updates because frankly we do a lot of book work & that’s pretty boring.  This week, however, was Pirate Week.  Talk Like a Pirate Day was 9/19 and we celebrate it all week.  We love pirates!

The bones of our Pirate Week this year was the VeggieTales Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything VBS Kit.  I had gotten a copy of the whole VBS kit for $25 a year or two ago.   (Right now, there are 5 left at Amazon for $31.00 (normally $130.00!).  If you want one, hurry!)   Knowing how much we love Pirates and collect pirate homeschool activities, I jumped on it.

In line with my usual last minute planning method, I got out the set to take a look on Saturday night.  It included several groups activities for the Preschool Set & another set for Elementary aged kids.  We did days 1-4 of the science experiments, bible story & snacks and the crafts for Elementary Kids.

I’m not even going to tell you how much I spent Sunday to buy all the missing pieces (i.e. stuff I didn’t have in my craft stash or pantry).  I will tell you that much of it will also be used for my Lil Bit’s birthday in January–she requested a Jake & the Neverland Pirates birthday party.

In addition to all the cool crafts (that I mostly did because she’s only 4-1/2), we did lots of Jake & the Neverland Pirates themed worksheets, courtesy of 1+1+1=1.   She figured out greater than / less than super quick and even did handwriting and reading without complaining.

The best part was pure luck.   Hubby called to ask us to go to Arby’s and bring him lunch. I ordered a kids meal which I don’t do much of anymore and the prize was a build your own pirate.   Perfect end to Pirate Week 2012!

Do you celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day?
