August is the greatest month for produce in Michigan.   Our CSA box is starting to fill up with a variety of summer produce — potatoes, beets, tomatoes, carrots, onions, garlic and a bunch of veggies that I haven’t got the slightest clue what to do with :).   Luckily, I was blessed to be able to preview a copy of Simply Summer from Modern Alternative Mama.

Simply Summer is a fabulous resource for eating well with summer produce.  It includes main dishes, side dishes, salads, drinks and desserts.   Simply Summer even includes a few sauces and dressings.   If you are hoping to cook more from scratch, avoid the oven or even just eat a little lighter, this is the cookbook for you.   If you have food allergies, she has you covered — each recipe has an icon indicating that if it’s free from nuts (both tree and peanuts), dairy, eggs, gluten or meat.

I love the recipe for Bacon Wrapped Chicken with Italian Salsa and she even includes a recipe for Lemon Sorbet that doesn’t require an ice cream maker (though one is on my wish list!).    When it gets a little cooler, I want to try the Bacon-Cheddar and Broccoli-Cheddar dips.   In a normal summer, I’d have already made them, but it’s been 90+ degrees nearly every day this summer — in Northern Michigan.   Crazy!    For those 90 degree days, she includes a recipe for a real food tropical punch.   Yes, please!

I even provided a quote for the book:

“Kate’s newest book, Simply Summer, is simply that. She has taken all the guesswork out of meal planning for the summer months and has provided recipes for foods that are real, uses ingredients I can easily find or already have, and are simple. She even includes recipes for several sides and shares what her family likes to pair them with. Salads, sides, main dishes, desserts, drinks and even sauces and dressings are included in this great cookbook that includes over 30 recipes for enjoying summer’s bounty! This is a great option for baby stepping into eating real food.”

Kate has graciously offered a copy to you to help celebrate my blogoversary.  To enter, use the widget below.

Tacos are my go to meal lately. We always have beef in the freezer and homemade tortillas are pretty easy and so yummy!
