I’ve been working really hard lately on trying to be more mindful and appreciative of my husband, so when the opportunity came to review Praying God’s Word for Your Husband by Kathi Lipp, I was all about it!

Praying God’s Word of Your Husband starts with some great basics on WHY to pray the scriptures for your hubby, how and why to pray if you are “unequally yoked” spiritually, and preparing your heart to pray for him.  If you are a prayer newbie or you’ve fallen off the wagon, Kathi gives advice about prayer in general, too.  She covers 14 different areas of hubby’s life, such as work, his past, his parenting, and his relationship with God.  A key difference between this and other books, is that she doesn’t just tell you what to ask for your husband in prayer, but how to do it scripturally.

What is praying scripturally?   You take a verse in scripture and put his name in and ask God for what’s in the verse.   Here’s an example:

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. (Col. 3:23)

And here is the prayer she wrote (p. 77):

Let my husband be ever mindful of your gracious hand in all his works.  As he pours his heart into the projects and activities required by his job, remind him that it is you we work for, with gratitude for the many talents you have bestowed on us.

Kathi wrote Praying God’s Word For Your Husband in such a sweet tone that you don’t feel like you are being preached to and she includes TONS of examples of bible verses to use for praying for your hubby.  The book is literally full of it!   I loved the stories and prose interwoven with the verse and prayer examples; I probably could have read a whole book (or at least a lot of blog posts :D) about that alone.   At the end, she includes a verse index by book.

One of the things that I felt this book was missing was something to make it a little more of a resource.   The index was by book of the bible.   I would have added an index by topic (work, family, etc) so that I could reference the verse I need when I had something specific to pray about.    Another thing I would have loved was some sort of supplement to the book — a mini prayer book, a set of cards (business or 3×5 size), or some sort of printable to make this an awesome “while-you’re-praying” resource and less of a “how-to” book.

If you’re familiar with Stormie Omartian’s Power of a Praying Wife, but don’t like tone or style, you will probably enjoy this book.   It is a lot less preachy and much more about why you will WANT to do this for your hubby and why he NEEDS it.   I really enjoyed this and if you’ve never prayed for your hubby and would like to start, I recommend starting here.

As a side note, after I finished this book, I went to her website to find out more about her and ended up getting two other books — The Marriage Project and The Husband Project.   For the next five weeks, as a part of Serve Your Spouse Saturday, I will be sharing a teaser project from The Husband Project.   I can’t wait to share them with you!
