January, 2012:

A Lilo & Stitch/Luau Birthday Party

My little girl turns 4 today at 7:28p.  We had her birthday party this past Saturday and I thought I’d share some pictures and printables, top 10-style.

1.  The cake.

Isn’t it cute?  And totally easy!  Boxed cake mix, 2 cans of frosting, blue food coloring, and 3 butterfingers bars.  She had a blast beating the bars with a soup ladle.  I should have taken a picture of THAT!

2.  Happy birthday banner.

I made it myself with items received in a review I did for mygrafico!  You can download a nameless happy birthday banner – Page 1, Page 2, Page 3, Page 4.

3.  Leis.

Everyone had one and no one took one home so I guess it’s a good thing we like the south pacific :) .

4.  Flip flops.

Originally I saw these as doorway hangers but I taped them to the door since I have little kids.  I think she’s going to want them in her room later.  You can get the files here – Page 1, Page 2, Page 3, Page 4, Page 5.

5.  Cupcake toppers.

I made these too and even put one in the cake so I didn’t have to pipe frosting!

6.  Party favors.

Totally forgot to pass these out until the end of the party which is just as well since I didn’t have enough.  I bought the bubbles at the CVS, 6 for $4.  The buckets were on clearance in Target for $0.20 each! and the beach balls came from Oriental Trading Co.

7.  Thank you stickers.

These I made too (see favors above for pic).  I put them on the bubbles & will use the rest for envelope seals for the thank you cards.   Download your copy here–I printed these on Avery 5408 labels.

8.  Cool dishes/trays

I bid on a beach basket at a church fundraiser with the party in mind.  They were perfect!

9.  Mylar balloons.

In my opinion, it’s not a birthday without Mylar balloons.  I tried to order some luau ones but everything else was out of stock and so I just canceled to order.

10.  Food.

Surprisingly, she requested homemade pizza for her birthday.   Who am I to argue?   I also had salad, chips & dip, and my step-mother brought a grape salad so I didn’t have to make mine :) .   We also had cupcakes & the cake.  I meant to serve ice cream, too, but I forgot.

What are some of your birthday traditions?

Resolutions 2012 Update & Inspiration

So as you might remember, I had several New Year’s resolutions.   All good things and I even broke it down to 3 a month so I didn’t get overwhelmed.

Well, this month my goals were:

  1. Use my hubby’s love languages more.
  2. Say a morning offering every single day.
  3. Set a budget.

I’ve done better in my hubby’s love languages, though I still have room for improvement.   I said a morning offering every day even if I didn’t remember until 6pm (ahem).   Setting the budget didn’t go quite as well, but I made significant strides toward getting that back under control.   Our finances are a confusing mess of transfers between accounts, automatic payments, recurring saving for big ticket expenses (like insurance) and so despite my extreme distaste for Intuit (long story), I bought the newest version of Quicken.

I continue to struggle with wanting to do it all at once — I even signed up for a Titus 2 class that runs for 9 months.   I find, though, that since it wasn’t part of my baby steps plan, it kind of sits at the wayside.   I need my encouragement in small bite-sized god-puffs.   They are kind of like God-Breezes (a la Flylady), except super small and quick.   But they stick in my craw.

I get them in various places — random blog posts, tweets, facebook posts, priests sermons, and talks at my mom’s group.   One of my favorite inspirations comes from a newsletter I get from Eternal Encouragement.  Every week I get something new.  One week it was about being the best whatever I’m doing.  Right now, I’m being the best blogger I can be.  When I’m with my kids, I need to be the best mom.  When I’m cooking, I need to be the best cook.   Another week, it was about listening to God — I think it made the point about listening for God’s whisper so you don’t get hit with a brick.  I’m always getting hit with bricks :) .   And once it was about interruptions and I’m always frustrated with interruptions so that really helped, too.   If you are in need of some bite-sized inspiration, visit Eternal Encouragement and sign up for their newsletter.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Hero Worship – Speak His Language

Love ? I love love love you.

One of my resolutions for the year is to make my husband feel more like the hero he is. One way that I’m going to do that is to speak his love language. Well, both of them actually.

There are 5 love languages, according to Gary Chapman:

Acts of service (mine)
Gifts (mine)
Time
Touch (hubby)
Words of affirmation (hubby)

Yeah, no similarities there. I’ve known his for years, but with two kids and much less quality time together, it’s more important than ever to make the moments we ARE together count.

If you haven’t already read it, I suggest that you go to the library and give Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman a quick read!

It’s an easy way to make him feel valued.

Do you use the love languages in your relationship?

Note:  I read the version written in 1992.  He came out with a new version in 2010.  I haven’t read it, but I imagine it would be just as useful!

Chasing Mona Lisa {Book Review}

Every once in a while, I want to read a good book.  A little romance, a little suspense, and maybe some espionage.   Chasing Mona Lisa fits all those criteria.

The newest book by Tricia Goyer and Mike Yorkey, Chasing Mona Lisa takes place in occupied France during WWII.   Paris is on the verge of being liberated from German occupation.  Under occupation, the Germans are plundering priceless artwork from France.   Many are plundered and transferred out of the country by the Reich.   Many other are purchased by a Reichsmarschall Hermann Goring.   And one, the Mona Lisa, is in his sights as a post-war bargaining chip.  Goyer and Yourkey masterfully weave a stories four main players:  a member of the French Resistance, the curator of the Louve, and two Swiss OSS agents who are all trying to stop Goring  (Gabi & Eric from The Swiss Courier).

I love the story line and like all good historical novels, it leaves me wanting to know more about the time period in which it occurred.  My world history is lacking and I want to find out more about the change of power in France when it almost became Communist.   The story moved along quickly and I was deep inside France and it’s art treasures everyime I opened it up.

I would recommend this story to anyone who likes historical fiction, especially that involving World War II, France, and masterpieces of art.   Goyer and Yorkey did a fabulous job with Chasing Mona Lisa.   This book did not disappoint — go check it out today! Chasing Mona Lisa
