We (DH) had been reading Lil’ Bit Grimm’s Fairy Tales before bed. She was liking them fine, but I felt the need to get a few classic picture books as well.

First up, Rapunzel , illustrated by Paul O. Zelinski. This is such a fabulously beautiful book. No wonder his books are Caldecott winners or Honorable mentions! They are very old style illustrations and some pages are all pictures and no words. It was nice to have non-Disney versions of stories, too. My only complaint is that they are a little tall & the don’t fit on the shelf well. I’m a bit of a neat freak :).

Next up, Red Riding Hood (retold by James Marshall), of The Stupids fame! I love that this version is one of he more gruesome ones where Grandma & RRH get eaten by the wolf. Those type of books are getting hard to find! The illustrations are cute and I am SO the grandmother. There is a part after the hunter gets her out of the wolf’s stomach where grandma was complaining hat it was so dark in there she couldn’t read a word. Hehehe.

 

We also got another Paul O. Zelinsky book, Rumpelstiltskin. We had never read Lil’ Bit that particular tale before and it was very enjoyable. For me anyway; I think she didn’t care much. The pictures are frame-worthy and we (DH & I) like that it’s told classically.

 

The last one we bought was Goldilocks and the Three Bears, also told by James Marshall.   We loved his illustrations of the naughtiness of Goldilocks.  I especially liked the opening page:

Once there was a girl called Goldilocks.  “What a sweet child,” said someone new in town.  “That’s what YOU think,” said a neighbor.

I love the personality.  Very fun stuff :).

    These books are great! We’ve read the Zelinski fairy tales before, and they are very well done.
    If you want to try something a bit different, fractured fairy tales are lots of fun 🙂 Like “Kate and the Beanstalk” by Mary Pope Osborne or “Waking Beauty” by Leah Wilcox.

    What a great little collection of fairy tale books! I agree about the Zelinskyi illustrations–they are gorgeous! I don’t think I’ve read all of the Marshall versions of the fairytales to my girls, which is a situation I definitely need to rectify! Thanks so much for linking up to RAT!

    The Zelinsky books look great.

    I like the versions that Trina Schart Hyman has done for several of the fairy tales. Her pictures are so lush. Another good author is Paul Galdone.
