One of the things I have noticed since I’ve been Reading My Library is that there are a TON of children’s books.  And lots of them are TERRIBLE!   I bring home 20-40 books at a time (that’s the limit at our library).  And of those 20-40 books, 2 or 3 are worthwhile.   Sometimes they are so bad that we don’t even finish them.

Anyway, that being said, here are some of our favorite books this week.

Time for Bed, the Babysitter Said by Peggy Perry Anderson is by FAR one of Lil’ Bits favorites.   She brings it to me yelling, “Go to Bed Joe!”.    It’s a cute little story about a little frog who refuses and fights his babysitter about going to bed.  After begging and pleading she asks him WHY he doesn’t want to go to bed and it’s because she didn’t say please :).   We loved this book.

John Patrick Norman McHennessy, the Boy Who Was Always Late by John Burmingham was another one of our favorites.  Lil’ Bit liked it because, of course, there is a MONKEY in it.  Seriously, I should just create a directory of every children’s book containing even a glimpse of a money. ahem.  Anyway, JPNM was always late and crazy things happened to him on the way to school and it drove his teacher nuts and he didn’t believe him.   Of course, it came back around and JPNM acted like he didn’t believe the teacher and left him hanging.  Literally!   Another super cute book.  I was hoping that all of his books would be as cute as this but it really didn’t work out that way.

The last book for this week was The Greedy Python by Richard Buckley and illustrated by Eric Carle (of the Very Hungry Catapillar fame).   We got the boardbook version and it was super cute.  Again, this book contains–you guessed it–a MONKEY.   A greedy python eats everything he sees, 10 animals in all, from a little fish to a huge elephant.  Of course the animals aren’t happy about being eaten and so they kick and all come back out.  The snake, who hasn’t learned anything is so hungry he ends up swallowing himself!

These look like a lot of fun–especially that first one. I think my girls would really like it!

I know what you mean about bringing home duds. I haven’t attempted what you’re attempting (Reading My Library), but even when I am selective, I still sometimes pick up some bad ones.

I linked over from Amy’s carnival, and I completely agree with your assessment of children’s books, Jen. I’m glad you found some you liked this week. JPNM looks especially interesting to me. Thanks for the review.
