Sunflower Serenade, by Tricia Goyer,  is the 12th in the Home to Heather Creek series published by Guideposts.    The Home to Heather Creek series is about a woman, Charlotte, who takes guardianship of her teenage grandchildren after their mother (who ran away) died suddenly and their father abandons them.   Even if you’ve never read this series, the book stands on its own very well.   Sunflower Serenade centers around the county fair and a country music star who is coming to perform.    At some point, Charlotte & her husband are asked to allow the star to perform her music video on their farm.   There is a lot of turmoil as the whole town become star struck.   The county fair board is thinking about money, Charlotte’s farm is turned upside down, her grandkids learn lessons about what is important and, of course, everything turns out in the end.

This book was fairly well written.  I was able to follow the story and the characters although I hadn’t read any of the others.   In places, I was a bit distracted by her mental thoughts and prayers, but most of them were not intrusive.  This book brought me into the world of something simple (the fair) and I started wondering how to participate in ours.

I don’t think I was the target audience for this book.   I think this book would appeal greatly to women between about 45 and 60 years old; they would more identify with Charlotte, the grandmother of teenagers.  Most of the people encountered in this book were Charlotte’s age, with a few side-plots of her grandchildren.   Overall, I would say it was a good solid read and would recommend it to anyone looking for clean, christian fiction that isn’t romance.

In keeping with the topic of this book, Tricia is also having a contest on her blog!   You can win a complete set of Home to Heather Creek books, or other great books from Guideposts.    Just submit your funniest ‘City girl goes Country’ or ‘Country girl goes City’ story.
